The ensemble performing here, Capella Itineris, is so named because the group often travels to concerts via backpacking, but composer Daniel Speer was also itinerant, holding numerous posts in medium-sized German towns in the late 17th century. He worked as a Stadtpfeifer, a city piper, and wrote a good deal of wind music, but he also composed religious music with brass (there is a good deal of evidence that much German Renaissance sacred music was not a cappella) and, most intriguingly, comic vocal pieces that are perhaps ancestors to Bach's comic secular cantatas. These are given only in German and French in the booklet, and making sense of them requires the use of footnotes, so they are not of much use to monoglot anglophones. However, those in a position to make the effort will find them pretty wild, including such characters as one who bleats like a goat. The rest of the music is pleasantly varied, probably because Speer's responsibilities changed as he moved around. He is not another Schütz or Buxtehude, but lovers of the German Baroque will find music, and even entire genres, of which they were previously unaware, and for library collections and Baroque enthusiasts, the album is invaluable.
