Joli début pour le petite rappeur de Detroit, Obie Trice, estampillé petit protégé d’Emniem alors qu’il a à peine commencé sa carrière. Cheers est tout simplement produit par Dr. Dre, Eminem, et la participation de l’orfèvre Timbaland… Il y a pire pour un début… Et Obie Trice ne gâche en rien sa chance : Cheers est certainement l’un des premiers albums les plus réussis du rap américain des années 2000. Sur ce long album de dix-sept titres, Obie Trice est entouré par des pointures en guise de featurings. Eminem, Nate Dogg et Busta Rhymes viennent rapper et transcender le flow acéré d’Obie Trice, qui fait tout d suite mouche dès le début du disque, comme sur l’utra efficace « Average Man », qui donne tout de suite le ton. Obie Trice se caractérise essentiellement par son phrasé tout en montagnes russes (le single « Got Some Teeth ») et sa percussion mélodique et rythmique, en atteste les épiques « Follow My Life » et « Hands On You ». Sur Cheers, on retrouve finalement le « son » Eminem et D12, également partagé par 50 Cent : un son rugueux, des paroles souvent violentes et pessimistes, le tout néanmoins doté dune dimension ludique et dansante. Ce « Detroit sound » connait à ce moment là ses premières heures de gloire, et installe Obie Trice dans le paysage du rap américain de manière durable. A l’écoute de ce premier opus, on a en effet tout de suite envie de trinquer au travail d’Obie Trice. Et de miser, à coup sûr, sur son avenir.
