C’est le 26 octobre 1969 que Nina Simone enregistre ce disque en public (ce qu’elle fit souvent), au Philarmonic Hall de New York, ce qui lui permet d’allonger ses chansons (il n’y avait d’ailleurs pas de place pour ajouter à l’album le « Suzanne » de Leonad Cohen qu’elle fit ce soir-là).
Mais on y trouve quelques pépites, comme le « Westwind » qu’elle emprunte à son amie sud-africaine Miriam Makeba, ou « Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair », livré ici en deux versions, l’une chanté par elle, l’autre par son guitariste Emile Latimer. « Who Knows Where The Time Goes » a été créé par Sandy Denny en 1967, puis reprise avec son groupe Fairport Convention, en Angleterre.
Sur Black Gold, on croise enfin une version de près de dix minutes de « Young Gifted & Black », cet hymne des droits civiques qu’elle composa avec son ami le poète musicien Weldon Irvine, en mémoire de Lorraine Hansberry, une autre amie chère, co-auteur de la pièce Raisin In The Sun, créée en 1959 et qui dépeint le quotidien d’une famille afro-américaine.
