Passé chez Atlantic Records après Kick Out The Jams, le MC5, qu’on savait pourtant imprévisible, prend de court ses fans et la critique en présentant cet ensemble de chansons courtes, au ton résolument fun (« High School ») mais pas encore tout à fait apolitique (« The American Ruse »), quand il n’est carrément pas contestataire (« The Human Being Lawnmower »), prises en sandwich entre deux reprises en apparence incongrues mais réussies : « Tutti Frutti » de Little Richard et « Back In The USA » de Chuck Berry, qui donne même son titre à l’album. Choisi comme producteur, le journaliste Jon Landau (futur découvreur de Bruce Springsteen) ne s’était jamais installé derrière une console et ça s’entend, mais qu’importe : le son rudimentaire et plat, avec ses guitares aigrelettes, sa batterie qui sonne comme un jouet et ses basses inexistantes, a contribué à la réputation du MC5, évoquant involontairement celui des disques des pionniers des fifties, qui avaient toujours fait rêver le groupe. En fin de compte, ce n’était que du rock n’roll, mais ils aimaient ça. Dommage que le public n’ait pas suivi…
Le titre « Shakin’ Street » a donné son nom au groupe de hard rock Français (1976).
