On connaît la passion, voire l’obsession, d’Hugues Aufray pour Bob Dylan. A 90 ans, l’interprète de Santiano rend hommage au Zim jusque sur la pochette et dans le titre de cet album, se référant au Self Portrait de Bob Dylan sorti en 1970. Mais c’est avant tout de lui-même dont parle Hugues Aufray dans ces 12 reprises en français de classiques de la musique folk américaine et du blues. C’est tout d’abord le chanteur engagé dans la lutte sociale que l’on croise dans cet autoportrait, comme dans le morceau d’ouverture intitulé Paie-moi ce que tu m’dois. Dans La Ballade de John Henry, il rappelle que « l’homme est un homme, pas un robot ». On suit également les aventures d’un chômeur faisant danser La Mathilda. On sera surpris non seulement par la modernité des textes – qui résonnent étrangement avec l’époque actuelle –, mais aussi par la voix encore juvénile du nonagénaire. Le racisme est également au cœur de cet Autoportrait, à l’image de Y a un homme qui rôde et qui prend des noms, dénonçant une Amérique profonde pourrie par le Ku Klux Klan. L’album se conclut avec deux tubes du chanteur : le fraternel Hasta Luego (sorti en 1973), ainsi que l’histoire tragique du pur-sang Stewball, enregistré ici à Abbey Road, en compagnie de Michael Jones à la guitare et à la voix. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
