Con l'album Welcome to the Black Forest (una compilation in qualità Hi-Res 24-Bit in esclusiva per Qobuz!), la MPS Records presenta una superba panoramica del suo eclettico catalogo. Dal 1968, l'etichetta tedesca fondata da Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer è un vero e proprio scrigno pieno di tesori e perle rare per gli amanti del jazz. Un roster tanto attivo nell'ambito del jazz rock (in piena attività nel periodo in cui l'etichetta venne fondata) quanto nello swing, nel free, nell'hard bop e persino nell'etno-jazz! Come dimostrano gli artisti riuniti in Welcome to the Black Forest (The Sounds of MPS), l'etichetta tedesca ha attirato diversi grandi nomi: i pianisti Oscar Peterson, Mary Lou Williams, Monty Alexander, Malakoff Kowalski e Bill Evans (qui in un'affascinante composizione lirica con degli archi arrangiati da Claus Ogerman); i chitarristi Joe Pass, Robben Ford e Jim Hall (commovente la sua Young One for Debra tratta da un live a Berlino); i sassofonisti Dexter Gordon Joe Henderson e “l'altro” Bill Evans; il tastierista George Duke (con una Capricorn smooth e funky); i trombettisti Freddie Hubbard e Don Ellis (alla guida della sua big band stellata per una versione psichedelica di Whiplash); il violinista Stéphane Grappelli, il vibrafonista Dave Pike (direzione:India con Mathar! ), il clarinettista Rolf Kühn o i cantanti Malia, China Moses e soprattutto Ella Fitzgerald (incredibile cover dal vivo di Sunshine of Your Love dei Cream!). Ma anche se MPS sta per Musik Produktion Schwarzwald, significa anche Most Perfect Sound!
