Inutile ricordare le innumerevoli sfaccettature di Leonard Bernstein, direttore d’orchestra, compositore, pedagogo, animatore, autore e via dicendo. Come Gershwin, Bernstein ha esplorato tutti i generi musicali, influenzandoli a uno a uno! Al punto che la sua musica è diventata una sorta di colonna sonora dell’America, da Broadway al pop passando dal jazz. Parliamo di jazz appunto. In occasione del centenario dell’autore di West Side Story, la casa discografica Decca propone di rendere omaggio alla sua arte con una compilation dei suoi brani interpretati dai più grandi musicisti e cantanti di ieri e di oggi. L’interesse di questo Jazz Loves Bernstein consiste soprattutto nel riunire classici e pezzi meno noti. Da Billie Holiday in Big Stuff (tratta da Fancy Free) a Diana Krall e Mark Whitfield in Some Other Time (dal musical On the Town), lo spettro è alquanto largo. Si trovano chicche come Tonight di West Side Story interpretata con grande enfasi da Billy Eckstine, o ancora, sempre dalla stessa opera, Maria e I Feel Pretty magnificati da Sarah Vaughan. Altri grandi nomi quali Oliver Nelson, Oscar Peterson e il suo trio, Bobby Scott, Eric Reed, Mel Tormé, Carmen McRae, Bill Charlap, Maynard Ferguson e Bob James rivisitano, ognuno a suo modo, canzoni e temi entrati nel patrimonio collettivo.
