Con il suo triplice album dall’azzeccatissimo titolo The Epic uscito nel 2015, Kamasi Washington diventava, a 34 anni compiuti, il nuovo idolo dell’universo jazz e non solo. Va detto che parallelamente ai suoi lavori puramente jazz, il sassofonista californiano collaborava con gli artisti più diversi quali Kendrick Lamar (To Pimp a Butterfly e Damn), Flying Lotus (You’re Dead!), Thundercat (The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam), Run The Jewels (Run The Jewels 3) e ancora Ryan Adams (Gold). E siccome The Epic era uscito su Brainfeeder, l’etichetta di Flying Lotus, c’erano tutti i presupposti per rendere ancora più originali l’artista e la sua musica… Per questo album, è di nuovo una scuderia «non del tutto jazz» ad accoglierlo, la Young Turks Records, sottodivisione della XL Recordings, in cui si ritrovano sia The XX che FKA Twigs, Sampha e SBTRKT. Opus piuttosto breve (poco più di 30 minuti), Harmony Of Difference propone in realtà una musica costituita essenzialmente da un’opera multimediale presentata al Whitney Museum di New York, nello specifico delle tele dipinte dalla sorella del sassofonista, Amani Washington, e un cortometraggio del cineasta spagnolo AG Rojas. Il risultato finale è abbastanza vicino a The Epic a livello concettuale. E Kamasi Washington mescola energia e spiritualità con il virtuosismo che lo contraddistingue, mentre il suo soffio rimanda tanto a Gato Barbieri quanto a Pharoah Sanders. In questo disco, egli conferma inoltre la sua abilità nel sovrapporre gli strati, che si tratti di percussioni, aerofoni o armoniche, senza mai risultare indigesto. Al contrario, la foga e la tempesta di emozioni che si sprigionano da Harmony Of Difference potrà raggiungere facilmente anche un pubblico solitamente poco ricettivo all’idioma jazz… © MZ/Qobuz
