Kendrick Lamar, autopsie d’un phénomène

La plèbe comme l’underground le vénèrent. Et rarement rappeur n’aura autant fait l’unanimité. Mais comment Kendrick Lamar a-t-il pu laminer ainsi la concurrence ? Et cela risque de durer encore un certain temps…

Ici, le tubesque côtoie le plus avant-gardiste, le sensuel se frotte au plus hardcore, les effluves de soul psychédéliques seventies (Lust) fricotent avec le minimalisme électro (Humble). Sa plume engagée reste aiguisée comme jamais, entre prêches et introspections plus personnelles ponctués de belles allégories de l’Amérique de Trump. Ainsi, quand l’animateur Geraldo Rivera de Fox News accuse « le hip hop de faire plus de mal aux jeunes Afro-Américains que le racisme lui-même », Kendrick lui répond brillamment sur DNA, analyse complète de son ADN personnelle. Plus loin, sur Duckworth, il se fait le conteur des galères passées de ce père ex-membre de gang. Du plus grand au plus petit dénominateur commun, Kendrick Lamar rappe ici à 360°. La liste des invités conviés à la fiesta est, elle aussi, éclectique au possible : Rihanna (Loyalty), U2 (XXX), James Blake (Element), Kaytranada (Lust), Kamasi Washington (Lust), Steve Lacy de The Internet (Pride), Thundercat (Feel), les Canadiens de BadBadNotGood (Lust), sans oublier Kid Capri (Element, XXX, Duckworth et Love), cultissime DJ et MC du Bronx qui sévit à l’aube des années 90 en plein âge d’or du rap, tous apportent non seulement leur touche personnelle mais montrent, toujours et encore, l’ouverture d’esprit et la gourmandise d’un artiste dépassant les frontières du hip hop. Une fois de plus, on sort sonné de ce disque surpuissant qui lustre un peu plus la couronne de son auteur. Capable de se réinventer, Kendrick Lamar peut profiter de cette situation pour prendre le temps de soutenir quelques protégés (SZA, Lance Skiiiwalker, Zacari Pacaldo, SOB x RBE, Babes Wodumo…) en attendant qu’une quelconque relève solide ne vienne l’éjecter de son piédestal. Mais pour l’instant, l’horizon est dégagé comme jamais…
