Je vous parle d'un temps. Que les moins de vingt ans. Ne peuvent pas connaître… La tirade d’Aznavour est de rigueur avec ce mythique (l’adjectif n’est pas galvaudé) premier album d’EPMD paru à l’été 1988. Le hip hop entre alors dans cet âge d’or qui ira jusqu’au milieu de la décennie suivante. Le genre jusqu’ici très minimaliste, axé autour de boucles disco et de sons électroniques, s’étoffe musicalement grâce à l’utilisation de samples piochés dans l’histoire de la soul, du funk, du rock et du jazz. Le rap devient beaucoup plus funky et plus chaud, notamment grâce aux flows complémentaires d’Erick Sermon et Parrish Smith… Des bouts de Kool & The Gang, Aretha Franklin, Zapp, Syl Johnson, Marva Whitney, Otis Redding, Rick James, Joe Tex, des J.B.'s mais aussi d’Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Steve Miller Band et Mountain se promènent tout au long de ces dix titres parfaitement produits par le duo de Long Island lui-même. En ouverture, le titre éponyme Strictly Business, adossé contre un sample du I Shot The Sheriff de Bob Marley dans la version de Clapton, symbolise bien la quintessence de ce rap qui cite le passé pour se l’approprier et en faire une potion magique urbaine et festive. Ponctué par les scratches de DJ K La Boss, Strickly Business est un disque phare de cet âge d’or du hip hop. Un album on ne peut plus influent et représentatif du style East Coast, indispensable à toutes les discothèques idéales dignes de ce nom. © MZ/Qobuz
