Début 1994, Nas surgissait sur la scène rap avec un premier album choc, Illmatic, un des disques essentiels de l’âge d’or du hip-hop new-yorkais. Un chef d’œuvre précurseur qui ressort en édition deluxe 20e anniversaire agrémenté de dix remixes, démos et autres inédits (dont un énorme freestyle de plus de sept minutes enregistré le 28 octobre 1993 lors du mythique Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show sur l'antenne de la station WKCR). Dès ce premier album produit par (on prend sa respiration, attention) Pete Rock, Q-Tip, DJ Premier et Large Professor, Nas offrait une peinture poétique et nuancée de la vie dans la cité de Queensbridge.
