After finishing writing the two last movements of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony which he recorded for Sony Classical, Swiss conductor Mario Venzago is now tackling the recording of another hypothetical work by Schubert, his recently took on the Symphony in E major, D. 729, this time completed by the Austrian composer Richard Dünser.
It is one of five symphonies abandoned by the composer along the way. Unlike the other drafts, this one is available in an almost complete draft of all four movements. However, Richard Dünser went looking for what he found too weak in the drafts of this Seventh Symphony, in other fragments from the same period.
It is always with a certain unease that we must approach such a reconstruction, wondering whether it would not be better to let all these unfinished works lie dormant. The answer lies in the music, and particularly in the poignant statement of the Andante, which is pure Schubert. It's up to you to make up your own mind. © François Hudry/Qobuz
