En 2013 avec Walking Shadows, Joshua Redman avait trempé son saxophone dans un bel arrangement orchestral signé du compositeur Patrick Zimmerli. Six ans plus tard, les deux hommes récidivent avec Sun on Sand, une suite dense dont chaque mouvement est, selon leur auteur Zimmerli, “une expression de la lumière”. Redman est accompagné par l’ensemble Brooklyn Rider, le bassiste Scott Colley et le percussionniste Satoshi Takeishi. Tout ce petit monde fait vaciller les frontières qui séparent jazz et musique contemporaine grâce à un alliage atypique de bribes picorées chez George Russell, Milton Babbitt, Michael Nyman voire Frank Zappa. Si de lumière il est ici question, c’est sous toutes ses formes. Du clair-obscur au plein soleil, le disque de Joshua Redman et Patrick Zimmerli est un nuancier de teintes assez originales. En 2019, le jazz orchestral n’est pas vraiment un genre surreprésenté, aussi leur initiative d’excellente facture mérite qu’on s’y attarde. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
