Composées entre 1742 et 1744, les Sonates württembergeoises, nommées ainsi d'après le nom de leur dédicataire, opèrent un lien entre baroque tardif et Empfindsamkeit (en allemand: sensibilité, sentiment), ce mouvement artistique précédant la période dite classique et caractérisé par une priorité donnée aux humeurs contrastées dans les tempis, mélodies et variations de timbres. Sensiblement influencées par l'héritage de Bach père, auquel Carl Philipp Emmanuel vouait une admiration sans borne, ces sonates manifestent une élégante inflexion dans l'oeuvre C.P.E Bach dans la mesure où transparaît désormais la volonté de réunir l'expressivité émotive et la rigueur mathématique de l'écriture en contrepoint. Cette dualité est particulièrement criante entre les différents mouvements, en témoigne la Sonate n°1 en La mineur H.30, aux deux premiers mouvements Moderato et Andate amples et fluides succède un Allegra assai à la métrique bien plus carrée. ECM nous fait l'inestimable cadeau de ces sonates dans une version jusq'ici inédite, enregistrée par l'immense Keith Jarrett au Studio Cavelight (New Jersey) en mai 1994. Depuis que l'on sait le pianiste américain contraint à une retraite anticipée à la suite de deux AVC en 2018, toute nouvelle parution de son crû nous laisse un déchirant goût doux-amer. A l'image de cet album où l'élégiaque se mêle au triomphal. Loin des sonorités particulières du toucher bondissant et élastique qui a fait l'inimitable marque de fabrique du père du Köln Concert, cette production à la prise de son parfaitement soignée offre à l'auditeur la joie d'un piano à la rondeur inouïe, le toucher de Jarrett est lumineux; les attaques touchent en plein coeur, grâce à une compréhension subtile des jeux d'harmonies. On connaissait de Jarrett sa phrasé mordant, imprévisible, rebelle. Il se révèle tout aussi génial dans la sobriété et l'économie, et nous livre ici un disque à la beauté renversante. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
