"The Death of Klinghoffer" est un opéra basé sur l'histoire réelle de la prise d'otage des passagers du navire de croisière l'Achille Lauro en octobre 1985 qui a conduit à l'exécution de Leon Klinghoffer, un retraité juif-américain, par les terroristes du Front de Libération de la Palestine le 8 octobre 1985. Le livret de l'œuvre est de la poétesse américaine Alice Goodman qui avait déjà collaboré avec le compositeur pour son précédent opéra "Nixon in China" (1987).

Dans le sillage immédiat de la création bruxelloise en 1991 et de la reprise lyonnaise peu après, l’opéra The Death of Klinghoffer fut enregistré en 1992 par l’Opéra de Lyon et la distribution originale. Le sujet ne manqua pas de soulever des controverses, car l’ouvrage retraçait un événement des plus récents : la prise d’otage sur le navire de croisière Achille Lauro en 1985 – six ans auparavant seulement ! – au cours de laquelle les preneurs d’otages, issu de l’OLP, assassinèrent froidement l’un des otages, l’infortuné retraité paraplégique états-unien Leon Klinghoffer. Entre accusations d’antijudaïsme et de glorification romantique de la cause palestinienne, John Adams et le metteur en scène Peter Sellars en virent de toutes les couleurs, et de nos jours encore l’opéra continue à diviser les observateurs et, surtout, les directeurs qui hésitent à le programmer. Ce qui n’empêche pas la partition d’Adams d’être un extraordinaire chef-d’œuvre, qui n’appartient d’ailleurs pas vraiment à sa veine « minimaliste ». Le compositeur déroule un discours continu, d’un intense lyrisme et dans des couleurs orchestrales rares. Quel que soit l’opinion des uns et des autres quant au sujet en lui-même, il n’en reste pas moins que c’est là un des incontournables monuments de la fin du XXe siècle. © SM/Qobuz
