Ummagumma esce nel 1969 ed è il quarto album firmato Pink Floyd. Il gruppo britannico questa volta sceglie la formula del doppio LP, uno dedicato alle registrazioni in studio e l’altro alle esibizioni dal vivo. Per l’occasione vengono scelte le riprese del Mothers Club di Birmingham e al Manchester College of Commerce. Richard Wright ha il compito di introdurre l’album studio con “Sysyphus”, suite in quattro parti dalle sonorità classiche e progressive. “Astronomy Domine” di Syd Barrett è invece l’apertura potente alla sezione live del disco, che prosegue mediante i brani “Careful with That Axe, Eugene”, “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” e “A Saucerful of Secrets”. Un album di sperimentazione che vanta un posto speciale nell’intera discografia Pink Floyd.
