A forza di assimilarla a Prince, era chiaro che sarebbe successo: Janelle Monae canta nientedimeno che con la star di Minneapolis sulla seconda traccia del suo secondo album! Ma dietro questo bel fatto d’armi (a cui si possono aggiungere dei featuring altrettanto sfolgoranti come quello di Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding e Solange Knowles), guai a dimenticare la cosa più importante: questo disco è un Everest di soul, R&B e funk moderno. A tre anni di distanza da The ArchAndroid, impressionante concept album che la piazza subito sullo scacchiere del groove contemporaneo, Janelle Monae ha messo a punto una suite alquanto smagliante. Lontano dai canoni banali e spesso troppo zuccherosi dell’R’n’B contemporaneo, la musicista originaria del Kansas cura maggiormente melodie, stile e prosa.
