Tonight’s The Night fa parte dei grandi dischi grigi della storia del rock’n’roll. In sei mesi, Neil Young perdue due persone care, entrambe uccise dall’overdose: il chitarrista Danny Whitten e il roadie Bruce Berry. Ovvio che l’album registrato nell’agosto e nel settembre di quel 1973 (ma pubblicato solo nel giugno del 1975, dopo On The Beach) sia cupo come pochi… Il viaggio introspettivo di Tonight’s The Night si nutre di quei drammi personali mescolandoli all’atmosfera opprimente che regna all’epoca in America. Violenze urbane, consumo crescente di droghe, guerra del Vietnam e utopia hippie alimentano una partitura tetra ma sublime e straziante. In Tonight’s The Night persino la strumentazione è malferma, tra un piano barcollante e una pedal steel usata con parsimonia. Una sobrietà che accentua la bellezza delle melodie, come nelle struggenti ballate Tired Eyes, New Mama e Borrowed Tune…
Il 20, 21 e 22 settembre 1973, Neil Young e i suoi musicisti ovvero i Santa Monica Flyers (nello specifico, Ben Keith alla pedal steel, Nils Lofgren alla chitarra e al piano, Billy Talbot al basso e Ralph Molina alla batteria) salgono sul palco del Roxy, un nuovo locale nel quartiere di West Hollywood a Los Angeles. Nelle loro mani c’è un repertorio che sa di morte e di zolfo, ma di cui consegnano al pubblico californiano delle versioni intrise di una grande forza emotiva, di un autentico calore e, a sprazzi, persino di una gioia sincera e comunicativa che risulta naturalmente assente nelle versioni in studio. In ciò risiede la magia di quest’archivio riesumato e restaurato.
