Il revival soul del XXI secolo ha generato dei progetti spesso troppo artificiali. Ma una cosa è certa: non è il caso di Durand Jones & The Indications, che sono delle eccellenze in questo genere. Per loro, si tratta di un esercizio semplice e naturale. Piuttosto che impelagarsi nei discorsi sulle tecniche di registrazione, o voler a tutti i costi riproporre le formule degli album più iconici della Great Black Music, la band originaria della Louisiana e dell'Indiana preferisce basarsi sul rhythm & blues degli anni ‘70, con le sue ballate e le sue gioiose orchestrazioni di archi, come nella loro nuova opera, Private Space. Come sul magnifico brano Ride Or Die, un paradigma del genere, un pezzo corale che si concentra sulla magia dei ritornelli azzeccati e sulla sensualità. I loro punti di riferimento sono Sylvia Robinson, i Delfonics, i Dramatics o anche Phyllis Hyman per il lato disco-funk, rappresentato dai brani The Way That I Do e il singolo Witchoo. Nel 2016, il loro primo album suonava più scolastico.
