Uno dei più grandi lussi che si possono permettere le star di questi tempi è quello di far uscire un album per caso, senza preavviso. Per quanto fosse più che atteso fin dalla loro prima collaborazione nel 2002, l’album comune di Jay-Z e Beyoncé viene inaspettatamente alla luce il 16 giugno 2018, contemporaneamente al NASIR di Nas e Kanye West. Strana coincidenza. Erede del 4:44 de Jay-Z e del Lemonade di Beyoncé, Everything is Love è un album incentrato sull’introspezione di una coppia fuori dagli schemi e sull’analisi della sua celebrità. I suoi nove pezzi sono da un lato una celebrazione del successo dei neri e una critica stridente alla società contemporanea. Quest’ album è anche l’indice di una riconciliazione, di un legame tra i due amanti che si pensava fossero ai limiti della separazione e che hanno operato, tanto in privato quanto in pubblico, per risolvere le loro recriminazioni e i loro disaccordi, utilizzandoli come fonte di ispirazione artistica.
Da un punto di vista formale, Everything is Love corrisponde ai modelli attuali, ma produce una nuova eco tra lusso e onore afroamericano. La coppia si avvicina nuovamente all’universo grandioso, qualificato e scrupoloso di Pharrell Williams, produttore su Nice e Apeshit. Le gamme pop di Beyoncé si fondono con le sonorità più soul-jazz di Jay-Z grazie soprattutto al lavoro di Cool & Dre, molto a suo agio nell’orchestrazione di questo cocktail equilibrista. Spesso più in avanti di suo marito, Beyoncé opera una vera e propria dimostrazione di forza, rappando con astio su diversi pezzi, giocando con la sua immagine e oltrepassando numerose frontiere. Jay-Z è all’altezza delle sue capacità, pur mostrandosi a volte pigro ma sempre in grado di avere dei lampi di genio su Friends o Lovehappy quando parla di famiglia e di dinastia.
