«Ancora un live del trio di Jarrett?» Difficile non disseppellire questa session in mezzo all’infinita discografia del gruppo che il pianista di Allentown forma con il batterista Jack DeJohnette e il contrabbassista Gary Peacock. Tuttavia, ascoltando questo concerto inedito dato il 14 novembre 1998 al New Jersey Performing Art Center di Newark, si capisce meglio ciò che ha spinto il produttore Manfred Eicher a pubblicarlo. Lo stesso Keith Jarrett scrive nelle note di copertina: «Sono rimasto sorpreso nel sentire quanto fosse incredibile la musica quella sera. Per me, questo non è solo un documento storico ma un concerto davvero fantastico!!»
Come è loro solito, i tre amici riprendono alcuni classici del Great American Songbook ma anche qualche chicca firmata John Coltrane ( Moment’s Notice), Bud Powell (Bouncin' With Bud) e Sonny Rollins (Doxy). Quel concerto segnava soprattutto una ripresa dell’attività per Keith Jarrett, costretto nei due anni precedenti a darsi una regolata per motivi di salute. Difatti, tra il 1996 e il 1998 il pianista ha sofferto di CFS, sindrome da fatica cronica, e assistere alla sua risurrezione in questo disco è un puro piacere. Senza bisogno di dilungarsi ancora sull’intrigante complicità tra il pianista e la sezione ritmica, After The Fall è palesemente un disco dalla voce unanime. Una voce estremamente originale, come nella cover della canzone di Bud Powell, che lancia la sfida e nel bel mezzo della quale lo swing la fa da padrone. Questo inedito è anche un concentrato di felicità. Una felicità palpabile. Sempre in Bouncin' With Bud, DeJohnette e Peacock appaiono incredibilmente frizzanti… Insomma, ecco un nastro che sarebbe stato un crimine lasciare in soffitta. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
