Al punto che nomi come Jacques Loussier, Keith Jarrett, il Modern Jazz Quartet, Dan Tepfer o Edouard Ferlet ‒ solo per citarne alcuni ‒ hanno affrontato di petto e una buona volta per tutte l’opera del Kantor di Lipsia. Brad Mehldau ha fatto una scelta ibrida. Difatti, il pianista americano non pubblica un album jazz in senso stretto – fan di «Bach in versione jazz» astenersi – ma mescola Bach (quattro preludi e una fuga) a brani personali e contemporanei, stabilendo una specie di dialogo con le opere originali.
A rendere ancora più interessante l’esercizio è il fatto che parte dell’opera di Bach prende la forma dell’improvvisazione. Quanto allo stile e alle composizioni personali di Mehldau, entrambi hanno sempre racchiuso elementi che rimandano al compositore tedesco. Che i jazzisti apprezzino la forza ritmica della scrittura di Bach è cosa nota. Qui, però, il pianista ha concepito il disco nella sua globalità, senza mai cercare di separare le proprie opere da quelle dell’altro. Di conseguenza, il risultato può disorientare sulle prime (soprattutto per chi conosce i preludi e le fughe di origine) ma affascinare alla lunga.
