Nathanaël Gouin
Pianist Nathanaël Gouin was internationally trained early in his career and was signed to the major Mirare label. He served as the artist-in-residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elizabeth in Belgium.
Gouin was born on March 5, 1988, in Colombes in the Paris suburbs. He took up both piano and violin at age three. His basic piano training occurred at the Conservatoire de Toulouse, where he studied with Thierry Huillet and Frédéric Vaysse-Knitter and earned prizes in piano and chamber music upon completion of his program. He went on to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was admitted by unanimous vote. Gouin's further education was international in scope. He took courses at the Juilliard School in New York, the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Germany, the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, and the Académie Musicale de Villecroze in southeastern France. Gouin took master classes with Louis Lortie, Jean-Claude Pennetier, and Maria-João Pires, among others. During Gouin's residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elizabeth, Pires incorporated him into her "Partitura" project. That effort sought to pair experienced performers with younger players. Prizes at the Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria, the Lyon Chamber Music Competition, and the Swedish Duet Competition (where he took the top prize) helped to develop Gouin's career. In addition to solo and concerto playing, Gouin performs in a duo with violinist Guillaume Chilemme.
Gouin's recording debut came with Chilemme in 2013 when the pair recorded an album of duos by Ravel and Marguerite Canal for the Maguelone label. Gouin later recorded the Piano Concerto in F major of Edouard Lalo for the Alpha label and then was signed to Mirare, issuing the album Franz Liszt: Macabre in 2017. He followed that up in 2020 with Bizet: Sans Paroles, by which time he seemed to have a promising career ahead.
