X-Raided

California rapper X-Raided started his musical career in a style typical of early-'90s gangsta rap but made history as the first rap artist to ever have his own lyrics help convict him during trial. He continued pushing his music forward while locked up, recording multiple albums either on the jail phones or with smuggled recording equipment. After serving more than 26 years in prison, X-Raided was released in 2018 and returned to rap with a renewed, more positive mindset. He immediately began appearing on tracks with Tech N9ne, Kurrupt, and King Iso, as well as signing a deal with Strange Music for the release of his 2023 album A Prayer in Hell. X-Raided was born Anerae VeShaughn Brown in Sacramento, California. At age 16, he recorded his debut album, 1992's Psycho Active. X-Raided's style was in line with the over-the-top gangsta rap intensity of the Geto Boys, N.W.A., and the like, and Psycho Active prominently featured more established fellow Sacramento rapper Brotha Lynch Hung on multiple tracks. By his teens, X was just as involved in crime as he was in creating music, being a member of a local chapter of the street gang the Crips. Shortly after Psycho Active was released, he and some of his Crips brethren were arrested on home invasion and murder charges, and during the trial, lyrics from the album were used by the prosecution to assert that the murder was premeditated. While incarcerated, X recorded a second album, 1995's Xorcist, over the jail phones, and 1999's Unforgiven was made on a contraband recording device smuggled in by a guard. He continued to make and release music while serving time, steadily releasing mixtapes and albums like 2002's These Walls Can Talk, 2012's Sacramentally Disturbed, and 2014's Psychoactive 2. After getting out of prison in 2018, X-Raided continued his tireless pursuit of music with even more drive, releasing a new album, California Dreamin', in 2019 and appearing on tracks with Tech N9ne and Kurrupt. In 2022, he signed on with the Strange Music label and they worked together toward the release of the 2023 album A Prayer in Hell, which was indicative of X-Raided's more thoughtful and enlightened perspectives after lots of reflecting on the mistakes of his youth during his decades in prison.
