Starlet
Swedish indie pop outfit Starlet rose from the same late-'90s scene that produced groups like Club 8, Acid House Kings, and Poprace. Led by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jonas Färm, they recorded a trio of sweetly melancholic guitar pop albums for the Parasol label before disbanding in 2003. 20 years later, Färm resurrected Starlet and recorded the set of songs he'd been working on at the time of their breakup. Released in mid-2023, the reverberant "My Sweetest Ache" marked the first outing from the band since 2002.
A native of coastal Malmö in the south of Sweden, Färm began playing guitar in 1992. His early songwriting attempts looked to contemporary indie pop groups like Popsicle for inspiration, though he later went through an intense Beatles phase. By the time he'd formed Starlet with fellow guitarist Joakim Odlund, bassist Henrik Martensson, keyboardist Anders Baeck, and drummer Ludvig Engelbert, Färm had developed a musical voice of his own. The band's 1997 debut, From the One You Left Behind, relied on lovelorn lyrics, jangling guitars, and upbeat rhythms occasionally adorned with flutes and harmonies. Released three years later, Starlet's sophomore set, Stay On My Side, showed significant growth and was well-received by critics. The album introduced a more overt chamber pop element and Färm's poignant songwriting resonated with a wider following. The group's original run lasted for one more album, 2002's austere and darker-toned When the Sun Falls on My Feet. The following year, Starlet began to splinter, its members moving on to various other projects like Pallers, the Bustups, Double Dan, and Babian. Färm moved north and eventually settled near Stockholm, where he largely abandoned the music business. In the early 2020s, he revisited an album's worth of songs he'd intended for Starlet's fourth album and set about recording them himself as more of a solo venture. The first song to emerge was 2023's "My Sweetest Ache," a decidedly lush track that loosely recalled Starlet's earlier work, while taking them somewhere new.
