Secret Night Gang

Secret Night Gang are a modern, high-powered extension of the U.K.'s club-based soul, funk, and acid jazz scenes. While they specialize in alternately driving and breezy grooves enlivened by a horn section led by saxophonist Callum Connell, they aren't averse to delivering the occasional love ballad to shine a brighter light on frontman Kemani Anderson. The Manchester-based band are signed to Brownswood Recordings, an independent label operated by Gilles Peterson, the BBC DJ who neologized acid jazz and co-founded the label of the same name. They made their full-length debut in 2021 with a self-titled album and two years later issued the follow-up Belongs on a Place Called Earth. The nucleus of Secret Night Gang is Connell and Anderson, who as youngsters played football together, and as teenagers rekindled their friendship while studying music in high school. They were inspired to become a songwriting duo after attending the 2018 Love Supreme jazz festival. Local jam sessions placed them in the path of original bassist Stuart Whitehead, and they eventually added to the mix the veteran drummer Myke Wilson (52nd Street, Swing Out Sister, Corinne Bailey Rae), rhythm guitarist Jack Duckham, and producer/engineer and manager Yvonne Ellis (Simply Red and also Swing Out Sister), plus an ever-shifting array of supplemental players contributing to their recordings and performances. In 2020, Secret Night Gang independently released "Wanna Be with You" and "The Sun," their first two singles, performed at the virtual 2020 edition of the Gilles Peterson-curated We Out Here festival, and struck a label deal with Peterson. Brownswood re-released "The Sun" early the following year as the first prelude to Secret Night Gang, which arrived that October. The next year, the band's international fan base grew with performances at the North Sea and Montreux jazz festivals and Bluedot and Primavera Sound, along with additional dates across the U.K. and Europe as openers for Khruangbin. Returning to the studio, Secret Night Gang made Belongs on a Place Called Earth with an emphasis on themes of hope and optimism. The album was released in June 2023 and coincided with appearances at Cross the Tracks and Love Supreme.
