Modern Art

Before earning acclaim with the long-running psych outfit Sun Dial, Gary Ramon was the leader of the Modern Art, a project that ranged from stark post-punk to more psychedelic territory as the '80s unfolded. Ramon began making music at an early age, playing with future Sun Dial member Anthony Clough (who also recorded as WeR7) and experimenting with a relative's collection of unusual instruments while still a child. As a teen, Ramon listened to Pink Floyd, Can, and Ash Ra Tempel along with New Order and Echo & the Bunnymen. These acts informed his early bands, which included ADH, the Lord, and Mystery Plane as well as the Modern Art, all of whom released a prolific amount of cassettes in the early '80s. The Modern Art debuted in 1982 with the Underwater Kites cassette, which Ramon released on his own Color Disc & Tapes label. From there, the band issued a steady stream of releases, including 1983's Oriental Towers; 1984's Dimensions of Noise; and Souvenir, a 1986 split release with Cleaners from Venus. The Modern Art also released two studio albums, 1987's Stereoland and 1989's All Aboard the Mind Train, which was issued by the German label Out of Depression. Though the band was offered a deal to record a third album, Ramon wanted to be in a group that could play live (despite their busy recording schedule, the Modern Art never performed a show), and so Sun Dial was born. During the 2010s, several Modern Art reissues appeared. The 2011 Spanish collection Circuit Lights (1982-1986) focused on their minimal/synth phase; 2013's Sonic Dimensions 1982-1985 included several early releases as well as previously unreleased demos planned for release in 1985; and 2017 saw a remastered reissue of Underwater Kites, where it all began.
