Matthew Check

Matthew Check is a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a sound rooted in the warm hues of introspective 1970s folk-pop and rock. He released his first full-length effort, The Condesa Queen, in 2020, followed by Without a Throne in 2022. A native of Newton, Pennsylvania, Check relocated to N.Y.C. to attend graduate classes at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He soon found himself splitting his time between his studies and playing in jams downtown with his banjo -- he would later combine the two persuasions into a self-coined genre ("jewgrass") and an album titled The Bluegrass Kabbalat Shabbat Experience. Check served as the first banjo player for the hip-hop/bluegrass collective Gangstagrass and appeared on the group's 2010 Emmy-nominated "Long Hard Times to Come," which served as the theme to the television series Justified. In 2019, he joined Joanie Leeds (under the moniker Joanie & Matt) and issued the Americana/folk effort Sterling. Check released his solo debut, The Condesa Queen, in 2020, followed two years later by Without a Throne.
