MAN ON MAN

The duo of Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum and his partner, Joey Holman, MAN ON MAN set out to document love in the time of COVID-19 with irrepressible indie dance-rock. They debuted the project with "Daddy" in 2020 before delivering their eponymous debut album in 2021. The follow-up, 2023's Provincetown, continued the debut's celebration and exploration of queer love with a dramatic meld of heavy fuzz, glossy synths, and driving rock beats on such unapologetic anthems as "I Feel Good" and "Showgirls." With Bottum having come out as gay in the early '90s, he and Holman, a onetime member of Christian band Cool Hand Luke, were looking to keep their musical chops in shape while sheltering at home in early 2020. Following a cross-country move from Brooklyn to Oxnard, California as shutdowns became imminent, their collaboration took the form of sex-positive songs that celebrated their relationship. They quickly produced an album's worth of material, releasing their debut single "Daddy" in May 2020. In early 2021, Polyvinyl gave the duo a home for releases beginning with their third track, "1983." All of the preview tracks were included on the album MAN ON MAN, which followed on the label in May 2021. Released in June of 2023, Provincetown followed suit, mixing celebration with social criticism on another set of queer anthems, including the brooding "Hush," featuring Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis.
