Makiko Hirabayashi

Born in Tokyo, Japan on September 17, 1966, Makiko Hirabayashi is a critically acclaimed jazz pianist and composer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She began playing piano at the age of 4 and spent five of her formative years in Hong Kong. When she was 20, she won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Initially interested in film scoring, she changed her focus while studying in Boston when she became immersed in the city’s live jazz scene. After graduation, Makiko Hirabayashi relocated to Copenhagen, Denmark to focus on a career as a pianist and composer. Inspired by classical and world music, her compositions have earned her acclaim from critics and jazz connoisseurs. She formed her own trio - Klavs Hovman on bass and Marilyn Mazur on drums - and recorded her debut album, Makiko (2006). The trio returned with two more albums - Hide and Seek (2009) and Surely (2013) - before adding Jakob Buchanan (flugelhorn) to their lineup and released the album Where the Sea Breaks (2018). In between these trio releases, she also issued the albums Binocular (2010) and Gong (2016). Working with a new quartet, Makiko Hirabayashi released the album Weavers in April 2021.
