Luke Cissell

Luke Cissell is a New York-based composer and multi-instrumentalist whose distinctive works fuse bright, glowing melodies and ornate structures while incorporating a heady range of styles from post-rock and classical to bluegrass and dream pop. A classically trained violinist with a Kentucky fiddling background, Cissell enjoyed a career as an in-demand session musician before recording a string of elaborate instrumental albums including 2018's Thinking/Feeling, 2021's Emerald Cities, and 2023's Serenade. A musical prodigy from Louisville, Kentucky, Cissell was a bluegrass fiddle champion by the age of eight, then made his way through the classical world and into a degree from Princeton. Moving to New York, he began his career as a composer while supporting himself through versatile session work, playing with everyone from Philip Glass to Ingrid Michaelson. Along the way he performed at some of the city's best-known venues from beloved dives like CBGB to the prestigious Carnegie Hall. Beginning with 2013's Cosmography, he began releasing a series of wildly eclectic albums that fused his myriad interests into an almost-unclassifiable mixture of bluegrass fiddle, shimmering electronic music, folk, classical, jazz, progressive rock, and art pop. Some works, like 2015's Backwoods, veered more toward organic and pastoral folk while others, like 2018's Thinking/Feeling, were a more freewheeling blend of experimental chamber pop and globally inspired arrangements. Cissell also kept his foot in the classical world, composing modern, if eccentric suites like 2019's String Sextets Nos. 1 & 2. He is known for playing nearly all the instrumental parts on his albums. In the next decade, Cissell's music began to include more electronic elements along with his usual blend of strings, guitars, drums, and folk instrumentation. 2020's Nightside was a sort of sci-fi Baroque collection while 2022's Emerald Cities mixed cinematic prog rock elements with shimmering synth pop. The composer returned the following year with Serenade.
