Kyle Bobby Dunn
One of the most acclaimed ambient artists of the 2000s and 2010s, Kyle Bobby Dunn composes sparse, serene drone pieces for guitar as well as orchestral instruments. His lengthy albums, sometimes lasting two or three hours each, are filled with meditative, hypnotic compositions that barely change, inhabiting a mood which is at once melancholy and numbly blissful. The majestic, reflective nature of Dunn's work is offset by his self-deprecating sense of humor and irreverent titles, such as the Smashing Pumpkins-nodding 2014 double-CD/triple-LP Kyle Bobby Dunn and the Infinite Sadness.
Raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Dunn began composing music and making films as a youth. While attending the University of North Carolina, he formed the short-lived duo Subtract by Two along with James W. Hill. Dunn's first album, Music for Medication, was self-released as a CD-R in 2002, with a limited reissue appearing a few years later. A handful of small-scale experimental releases -- including 2005 cassette You Made Me Realise and 2007 CD-R Six Cognitive Works -- preceded Dunn's proper debut album, 2008's Fragments & Compositions of Kyle Bobby Dunn. Released by Sedimental, the album included some of his earliest pieces for piano and strings. A guitar-based album called Fervency was released by Moodgadget in 2009. Most of its material was included on the 2010 Low Point double-CD A Young Person's Guide to Kyle Bobby Dunn, issued while its maker had yet to turn 25. The release was widely acclaimed, even earning praise from the New York Times, and Dunn's subsequent works were highly anticipated.
Ways of Meaning appeared on Desire Path in 2011, and his second double CD on Low Point, Bring Me the Head of Kyle Bobby Dunn, was released in 2012. A short album titled In Miserum Stercus was issued by Komino Records later in the year. In 2014, Students of Decay released the guitar-based Kyle Bobby Dunn and the Infinite Sadness as a double CD or triple LP. Split vinyl releases with Anjou and Wayne Robert Thomas appeared in 2018, preceding the three-hour From Here to Eternity, issued by Past Inside the Present in 2019.
