Kit Clayton
Producer and programmer Kit Clayton, born in Evanston, Illinois but based in San Francisco, California, studied computer science and electronic music at Conneticut's Wesleyan College. Clayton learned in the electronic music lab, where he composed interactive pieces. After he graduated, he worked out of his basement studio in San Francisco, not only on music, but on audio software that helped create systems to generate music with randomization. Clayton's creations as a producer, however, reached beyond "computer music"; for him, computers were just another means of creation to be used along with acoustic, analog, and other digital methods. Clayton's minimal-to-abstract, somewhat dubby techno, which garnered praise from such publications as The Wire and Muzik, has appeared on a large number of labels since the late '90s. Additionally, he either ran or co-ran his own labels, including Cytrax and Orthlorng Musork. Among his most notable releases are his trio of Cytrax EPs and the albums Nek Sanalet (Scape, 1999) and Lateral Forces (Surface Fault) (Vertical Form, 2001). Toward the tail-end of the 2000s, he collaborated with Seth Horvitz (aka Sutekh) and Matthew Curry (aka Safety Scissors) as Pigeon Funk.
