Dudok Quartet Amsterdam
The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam is an enthusiastic and energetic string quartet that has a repertoire spanning eras from the Renaissance to new works on commission. The quartet has toured Europe and the U.S. and has a growing catalog of recordings, including 2022's Reflections, which featured music by Shostakovich and Grazyna Bacewicz.
The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam was founded in 2009, fashioning its name after architect Willem Marinus Dudok. Its members -- violinists Judith van Driel and Marleen Wester, violist Mark Mulder, and cellist David Faber -- met while performing together in the "street symphony orchestra," the Ricciotti Ensemble. Mulder was succeeded by Lotte de Vries in 2014, with Marie-Louise de Jong assuming the position in 2017. The Dudok Quartet studied with members of the Alban Berg Quartet for two years at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and had further studies with Marc Danel at the Dutch String Quartet Academy. The group's other teachers and coaches include Eberhard Feltz, Luc-Marie Aguera, and Reinbert de Leeuw, among others. The Dudok Quartet found success quickly, capturing prizes at several major competitions, including wins at the 2011 International String Quartet Competition in Radom, Poland, and the 2012 Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition in Heerlen, The Netherlands. In 2014, the group was awarded the Kersjes Prize for chamber musicians, and the following year, it made its recording debut with Métamorphoses: Haydn, Ligeti, Brahms, on the Resonus label.
The Dudok Quartet has a vast repertoire that includes music from the Renaissance arranged for string quartet, standard string quartet repertoire by the likes of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, and music of the 20th and 21st centuries, including commissioned works by composers such as Peter Vigh, Joey Roukens, and Theo Loevendie. The group has premiered new works by other composers, including the opera Only the Sound Remains by Kaija Saariaho in 2016, with countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. Other collaborators include violist Lilli Maijala, pianist Alexei Lubimov, and soprano Elizabeth Hetherington, among many others. In 2017, the group issued its second album, Labyrinth: Mozart, Ligeti, Bach. 2018 was another pivotal year for the quartet, making its U.S. debut, capturing the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and issuing the album Solitude, featuring music by Mendelssohn, Weinberg, and others. The group performs regularly throughout the Netherlands, including appearances at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, and De Doelen in Rotterdam. It has also toured throughout Europe and the U.S., performing in such major venues as Wigmore Hall in London, the Beethovenhaus in Bonn, Germany, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The Dudok Quartet has remained active in the recording studio, issuing several albums including Haydn's Op. 20 quartets in two volumes (2019 and 2020), Brahms' string quartets and quintet No. 2 (2021), and Reflections: Shostakovich, Bacewicz (2022).
