Daniel Gortler
Pianist Daniel Gortler is a major figure in concert life, not only in his home country but also in the U.S. and Europe. He has been active as an educator in both Israel and the U.S.
Gortler was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, on April 12, 1965. Showing talent early, he began lessons with Naomi Cohen. Gortler graduated from Tel Aviv's Rubin Music Academy. He went on to the Musikhochschule Hannover in Germany, studying with Arie Vardi, and he had additional lessons from Christoph Eschenbach. Various prizes, including first-place showings at the Viña del Mar International Competition in 1987 and the Bremen International Piano Competition in 1991, put Gortler on the international map, and he scored a breakthrough when he replaced an ailing Murray Perahia in a San Francisco Symphony Orchestra concert conducted by Valery Gergiev. By the late 20th century, Gortler could boast a developing international career. He made his recording debut in 1996 as an accompanist to flutist Yossi Arnheim on the recital Sounds of Love and Legend. Gortler's solo debut came in 2009 on the Romeo Records label with the album Songs Without Words.
Gortler has appeared with major ensembles on multiple continents, including the Berlin and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestras, the Atlanta Symphony, the Houston Symphony, and all the major Israeli orchestras. He has been in demand at summer events, including the Montpellier Festival in France, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and the Israel Festival. Gortler issued the album Schumann: Piano Works on Romeo Records in 2011 and returned on the Prospero Classical label for the 2024 album Grieg: Lyric Pieces. He taught at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University, departing that position in 2011, and also served as a guest piano instructor at New York University from 2011 to 2013. Gortler has also given master classes at the Manhattan School of Music as well as other institutions.
