Dalia Stasevska

Chief Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the International Sibelius Festival, Dalia Stasevska also holds the post of principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She has made several appearances at the BBC Proms, including at the First Night of the Proms. Stasevska was born in what is now Kyiv, Ukraine, on December 30, 1984. Her family moved to Tallinn, Estonia, likewise under Soviet control, and then to Helsinki, Finland, when Stasevska was five. After a year, they moved to the city of Tampere, where Stasevska spent most of her youth. She retained ties to Ukraine and was inducted into the Order of Princess Olga in the III degree by President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2020. Stasevska studied the violin as a child, and at the Tampere Conservatory, she combined violin and composition studies. She continued to study violin and viola at the Sibelius Conservatory in Helsinki. In her twenties, she became strongly interested in conducting, even putting her violin in hock to finance conducting studies at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, where one of her teachers was the famed pedagogue Jorma Panula. She returned to the Sibelius Academy, where she studied with Leif Segerstam, and earned a diploma in conducting there in 2012. From 2010 to 2015, she served as artistic director of the Kamarikesä Chamber Music Festival in Helsinki. From 2014 to 2016, she was an assistant conductor at the Orchestre de Paris, working under Paavo Järvi. Stasevska has appeared as a guest conductor with prominent orchestras worldwide, including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. An enthusiastic opera conductor, she has appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Finnish National Opera. In December 2018, she conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm. Stasevska won various prizes in the early 2020s: she was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Conductor Award in 2020, the Alfred Kordelin Prize in 2022, the BBC Music Magazine's Personality of the Year Award in 2023, and she was named one of The New York Times' Breakout Stars of 2023. That year, she made her first recordings with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra on the album Leiviskä: Orchestral Works, Vol. 1, and an album of piano concertos by Rautavaara and Martinů, both on the BIS label. In 2024, she issued the album Dalia's Mixtape with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on the Platoon label, featuring music by several contemporary female composers, many issued monthly as singles. Stasevska is married to rock musician Lauri Porra, the great-grandson of Jean Sibelius.
