Crashdïet
Stockholm's Crashdïet emerged in the early 2000s with a sound and style rooted in the Sunset Strip glam/hair metal of the 1980s but with a more pronounced punk element. The band's raw and raunchy blend of Skid Row, Guns N' Roses, Kiss, W.A.S.P., and G.G. Allin quickly gained traction in their native Sweden, leading to a string of chart successes like Rest in Sleaze (2005), Generation Wild (2010), and Savage Playground (2013). The 2006 death of vocalist Dave Lepard nearly derailed the band. Still, Crashdiet persevered, utilizing a lazy susan of lead singers (H. Olliver Twisted, Simon Cruz, Gabriel Keyes) to preach the gospel of sleaze rock on subsequent efforts Rust (2019) and Automaton (2022).
After several lineup changes, Crashdiet was signed by Universal in 2004 -- making them, by their reckoning, the first sleaze rock act on a major label in over ten years -- and released their debut, Rest in Sleaze, the following year. The album hit number 12 on the national charts and spawned the singles "Riot in Everyone," "Breaking the Chainz," "Knokk 'Em Down," and "It's a Miracle." In January 2006, however, the band's lead singer and guiding light, 26-year-old Dave Lepard, committed suicide in his apartment after a bout of depression. His three surviving bandmates decided they couldn't continue without Lepard, but given an unexpected outpouring of sympathy and support from fans worldwide, they performed one final tribute gig in February. Several months later, the ex-members of Crashdïet met to discuss future plans, decided to continue on as a new band, and began the search for a new singer. By October, the trio announced they had decided to continue under the name Crashdïet after all, with the approval of Lepard's family, so as to keep his spirit alive and continue to spread the band's message.
In January of 2007, a year after Lepard's death, Crashdïet debuted with their new singer, Finland's H. Olliver Twisted (Reckless Love). A sophomore album, The Unattractive Revolution, was released in October, and reached number 11 on the Swedish albums chart. Twisted left the fold in 2009, clearing a path for new frontman Simon Cruz, who made his studio debut on 2010's Generation Wild. The band's highest-charting effort to date, the LP received an overseas release the following year on Frontiers Records. The brash single "Cocaine Cowboys" appeared in 2012 ahead of the arrival of the group's fourth full-length effort, 2013's Savage Playground. It would be the last outing for Cruz, who left Crashdiet in 2015 in the middle of the band's Japanese tour. The release of the single "We Are Legion" heralded the arrival of new vocalist Gabriel Keyes. Two more singles, "Reptile" and "In the Maze," arrived in 2019 ahead of the release of the full-length Rust later that year. 2022's Automaton served as the last hurrah for drummer Eric Young, who stepped down shortly thereafter. Featuring a guest spot from Steel Panther's Michael Starr, Automaton marked the band's first studio effort for Golden Robot Records.
