Brennen Leigh

Brennen Leigh is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and mandolin player known for her deft flatpicking, incisive storytelling, and retro sound rooted in classic country, bluegrass, and honky-tonk. Born in North Dakota and based in Nashville, Leigh has been active since the early aughts, issuing acclaimed efforts like The Box (2010), Prairie Love Letter (with Asleep at the Wheel) (2020), and Ain't Through Honky Tonkin' Yet (2023), that touch on multiple facets of American roots music. She has released albums with her husband, Noel Mckay, under the moniker Mckay & Leigh and had her songs covered by Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney, and Charley Crockett. Born in North Dakota and raised in a musical household in rural Minnesota, Leigh and her brother Seth Hulbert established themselves at a young age as formidable players in the upper Midwest folk and bluegrass scene. Leigh added Western swing to her repertoire after relocating to Austin in 2002, where she also met her husband and collaborator Noel Mckay. Two years later, she released her debut solo album, a collection of covers and originals titled Too Thin to Plow. She wove elements of traditional country, blues, and modern bluegrass into her well-received 2010 effort, The Box, and balanced wit, heartache, and whimsy on her first outing with Mckay, 2013's Before the World Was Made. 2015 saw the releases of In the Bleak Midwinter and Sings Lefty Frizzell, the former a collection of holiday songs with Mckay and the latter a solo outing taking on the works of the honky tonk icon. She moved to Nashville before the release of 2020's Prairie Love Letter, a collection of songs that utilized old-timey bluegrass architecture to convey stories of her South Dakota and Minnesota upbringing. In 2022, she teamed up with Asleep at the Wheel for a spirited set of tunes steeped in classic, 1940s-style Western swing, and in 2023 she released the vintage barroom trad country-leaning Ain't Through Honky Tonkin' Yet, which was produced by Chris Scruggs.
