Anthony da Costa

As a solo artist, Nashville-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Anthony da Costa has navigated acoustic folk, Americana, and adult alternative pop, sometimes blending all three on releases beginning with his 2005 debut EP, Already There. He approached alternative country-rock with the jangly Da Costa in 2016. His more collaborative work has included albums with Abbie Gardner and Adam Levy, and membership in the backing bands of artists such as Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O'Donovan, and Joy Williams. Anthony da Costa grew up in Pleasantville, New York on a variety of genres and styles, ranging from Bob Dylan and classic rock to boy bands and bluegrass. He sang both in his church choir and in school musicals. As a young guitarist, he began writing songs in his early teens and played open mikes, booked local shows, wrote, recorded, and toured as often as he could manage while in high school. He made his solo recording debut with the self-released Already There EP in 2005, following it with his first long-player, 2006's Rearrange, before he was 16. In 2007, he put out both the solo album Quality Time and Bad Nights/Better Days, a duo LP with jazz/folk singer Abbie Gardner. His third and fourth solo albums, Typical American Tragedy and Not Afraid of Nothing, followed in 2008 and 2009, respectively, and da Costa continued to work on his music when possible while attending college in New York City. He returned in 2012 with the full-length Secret Handshake, which was co-produced with James Frazee, who also contributed to the next year's Spring EP. It featured Margaret Glaspy's singing on two tracks. Da Costa relocated to Austin before completing his sixth solo album, Da Costa. He self-released it in 2016, the same year he spent several weeks on tour as Aoife O'Donovan's guitarist. Around that time, he also moved again, this time to Nashville. In 2017, da Costa issued the collaborative album Neighbors with Adam Levy and joined Sarah Jarosz's band as guitarist and harmony vocalist. He then toured with Joy Williams as both her opener and backing bandmember in early 2019 before releasing the EP Shadow Love that June.
