Annie Mac

Irish DJ and radio presenter Annie Mac has long championed U.K. dance music, carving out a career as a leading radio personality and globe-trotting DJ in the process. Mac was born in Dublin in 1978 to a music-oriented household: Her brother, Davey MacManus was the lead singer for the Crimea. Eventually she moved to Belfast to study English Literature at Queens University. It was during her time there that she attended Shine, a club in Belfast, introducing her to dance music and igniting a lifelong passion. By the end of her degree, Mac had taken an interest in radio and earned a Master's degree in it at Farnborough College of Technology. Mac then moved to Camden, London to live with her brother. There she worked with the student-run radio station SBN, alongside a DJ residency at Camden Underworld. Her brother also secured her some work experience at V2 Records, where she eventually became employed as a radio plugger. At 23, she joined the BBC Radio 1 team as Steve Lamacq's broadcast assistant; three years on, she launched the Annie Mac show. After stepping into the limelight, Mac saw her career and reputation grow significantly; by 2005 she had launched her first branded club night, Annie Mac Presents, at Fabric, which lead to the annual compilation series of the same name being launched in 2009. After a decade of hosting dance music broadcasts -- including the 7:00 P.M. Friday night slot, she took over Zane Lowe's Monday-Thursday slot in 2014, which allowed her to showcase a broader variety of music.
