En 2013, nos sorprendió ver la alianza entre El-P – el portaestandarte del rap independiente neoyorquino (primero con Company Flow, después ya en solitario y a la cabeza del sello Definitive Jux) – y Killer Mike, un sólido rapero callejero de Atlanta que se reveló como miembro de Outkast. Siete años y tres álbumes juntos más tarde bajo el nombre de Run The Jewels, el dúo no sólo se ha convertido en inseparable, sino también en un grupo esencial en el panorama del rap contemporáneo.
En RTJ4, los dos cuarentones siguen llevando la antorcha de un ruidoso y sedicioso rap heredado de Public Enemy. Pero si la influencia de Bomb Squad, que adivinamos desde sus primeras producciones a mediados de los 90, es más palpable que nunca, El-P fomenta aquí su propia revolución sónica e impulsa todo tipo de cosas nuevas sampleando al grupo post-punk Gang Of Four (the ground below), incorporando riddims del dancehall (holy calamafuck, coproducido por Dave Sitek de TV On The Radio), grabando al saxofonista nativo americano Cochemea (a few words for the firing squad (radiation)) y reuniendo a figuras tan diferentes como Pharrell Williams, Zack de La Rocha, Josh Homme, Mavis Staples o DJ Premier.
Los dos raperos se complementan de manera impresionante en sus timbres, sus flujos y su escritura. El-P ha conservado de la edad de oro del rap independiente el gusto y el talento para las letras de cajón y las punchlines laberínticas, y Killer Mike, que en el mundo civil se ha convertido en una de las principales voces de la izquierda americana al lado de Bernie Sanders, logra la hazaña de volver a colocar el comentario social en el corazón del rap.
