Resultaba prácticamente imposible plantearse una continuación a ese verdadero seísmo que fue Illmatic, el primer álbum de Nas. Tras describir bajo todos los prismas posibles las penas y sinsabores de su entorno vital en Queensbridge a lo largo de nueve densas piezas, el genial Nas había alcanzado estatuto de megaestrella planetaria con solo 22 años. Así que decidió ampliar su círculo de productores con The Trackmasters y Dr. Dre, apostando por una música más accessible y menos desarticulada. Y, al mismo tiempo, mezclando su pedigrí callejero con la narrativa gangsta y el discurso social sobre la condición afroamericana, el rapero de Queensbridge hacía ahora equilibrios entre el purismo musical y la pop culture. Tras el enorme éxito de “If I Ruled The World” junto a una Lauryn Hill en estado de gracia, Nasir Jones se convertirá con “It Was Written” en el rapero norteamericano por excelencia, capaz de brindarnos personajes inolvidables y magníficas historias de tono invariablemente triste, llenas de imágenes de las que se graban para siempre en el recuerdo.
