Vor 50 Jahren, am 3. Juli 1971, starb Jim Morrison auf mysteriöse Weise in einer Pariser Badewanne und hinterließ seine drei Partner Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger und John Densmore, die sich sechs Jahre lang unermüdlich bemüht hatten, seine Träume in Musik umzusetzen.
Trotz der Unzufriedenheit ihrer Fans beschloss die Band, auf dem nächsten Album, Morrison Hotel (1970), zum Blues zurückzukehren. "Wir wollten zu unserer Basis zurück", erzählte Krieger. „Übrigens ist "Roadhouse Blues" einer der Songs, auf den ich am meisten stolz bin, weil es nicht nur ein gewöhnlicher Blues ist. Es hat ein gewisses Etwas, das es zu einem Song macht. Außerdem haben wir es live aufgenommen, mit John Sebastian von Lovin' Spoonful an der Mundharmonika und Lonnie Mack, der diese fantastische Basslinie spielt." Jim Morrison trank immer noch genauso viel und wurde sogar seiner Freundin Pamela Courson gegenüber handgreiflich, als sie seine Flasche leerte, um zu verhindern, dass er es tut. Der Tontechniker Bruce Botnick setzte dem Streit ein Ende und das Paar ging Arm in Arm davon, als wäre nichts geschehen...
Derselbe Bruce Botnick wurde Co-Produzent des nächsten Albums mit den Doors, L.A. Woman, die ihren pedantischen Produzenten Paul Rothchild losgeworden waren. Dieser beschloss, das Schiff zu verlassen, nachdem er die ersten Demos des Albums gehört hatte und Riders on the Storm als "Cocktail-Musik" anprangerte. Nach einem katastrophalen Konzert in New Orleans, bei dem Jim nicht in der Lage war, zu singen, zogen die Kalifornier über Weihnachten in ein kleines Gebäude am Santa Monica Boulevard, in einen Raum, den sie "Doors' Workshop" nannten, und in dem sie gewöhnlich probten. Sie luden den Gitarristen von Leon Russell, Marc Benno, und vor allem Jerry Scheff, den Bassisten von Elvis Presley, ein – sehr zur Freude von Jim, der ein Fan des Kings war. Der Frontmann der Doors fühlte sich ohne den Druck eines professionellen Studios deutlich wohler und reduzierte laut Botnick seinen Alkoholkonsum während der sechs Aufnahmetage erheblich.
"Einfach und roh, wie unser erstes Album", lautete John Densmores Kommentar dazu in seiner Autobiografie. In diesem beengten Raum baute sich Jim Morrison eine Gesangskabine in der Toilette und benutzte sein Bühnenmikrofon, ein vergoldetes Electrovoice 676-G. L.A. Woman wurde in zwei Tagen aufgenommen, mit einer letzten Live-Take, bei der Jim den Text praktisch auf der Stelle erfand. "Wir fingen an zu spielen und es ging ab wie durch Zauberei. Ich weiß noch, wie Jim mit dem Mikrofon auf der Toilette saß, es war so witzig ", erinnert sich Krieger, "Es gab keinen Druck und wir hatten großen Spaß zusammen."
Das Album kam zum Abmischen ins Studio und im März reiste Jim zu Pamela nach Paris, um eine Pause von der Musikindustrie und vielleicht eine Entziehungskur zu machen... bis zu jenem verhängnisvollen Abend im Rock'n'roll Circus. Er starb am 3. Juli 1971, weniger als drei Monate nach dem Erscheinen von L.A. Woman und ließ die drei anderen Doors verwaist zurück, die von einem anderen Schicksal träumten. "Es wäre toll gewesen, einen Typ wie Sting zu haben", erklärte Robby Krieger. „Einen Kerl, der ganz normal und auch sehr talentiert gewesen wäre. Jemand, der nicht in jeder Sekunde seines Daseins zwischen Leben und Tod schwebte."
