Toby Ward

Toby Ward is a rapidly rising tenor, experienced in opera, early music, and lieder. He is a co-founder of Ensemble Pro Victoria. Ward was born on August 28, 1993, in Otley, in England's Yorkshire region. His first experiences came as a chorister at Leeds Parish Church. After his studies at Fulneck School, Ward entered King's College, Cambridge University, in 2013. He studied music and sang with the King's College Choir under the direction of Stephen Cleobury. He emerged as a star of the ensemble, performing solo on the BBC2 radio network program Carols from King's, on Radio 4 on Christmas Eve, and at the Royal Albert Hall; he also sang and toured with the select small group The King's Men. By the time he graduated from King's in 2016, Ward was already an experienced recording artist, having appeared on the King's College Choir albums 1615: Gabrieli in Venice, Evensong Live 2016, Hymns from King's, and Bach: St. John Passion. Ward has studied voice with Andrew Kennedy. While at Cambridge, he co-founded and served as co-director of the early music group Ensemble Pro Victoria, with which he continues to perform. In Cambridge University Opera Society productions, Ward appeared in works ranging from Handel's Semele, HWV 58, to Britten's Curlew River. He also studied vocal music under the Pembroke Lieder Scheme in 2015 and 2016 with famed accompanist Joseph Middleton and took master classes with Roderick Williams and Lawrence Zazzo. Since graduating from Cambridge in 2016, Ward has pursued a variety of activities. He served as musician-in-residence at the Uppingham School and sang with various choirs, including The Queen's Six, the Carice Singers, and the Trinity Consort; he has also appeared with The Hanover Band and taught at Queen Anne's School in Caversham. Ward has appeared in opera at the Sage, Newcastle with the Dunedin Consort under director John Butt. He was named Associate Artist with the Tenebrae Choir, and in 2021, he led Ensemble Pro Victoria on the Delphian release Robert Fayrfax: Music for Tudor Kings & Queens.
