Sinach

Sinach delivers her poignant worship songs with strong, passionate vocals that have made her one of the top gospel musicians in her native Nigeria. After releasing her full-length debut, Chapter One, in 2008, she became best known for her 2015 international gospel hit "Way Maker." Two separate covers of the song by Americans Leeland and Michael W. Smith landed in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart concurrently in April 2020. A member of her church choir, Sinach (born Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu) started singing in her mid-teens and wrote her first song at 19 with no ambitions to become a professional musician. She studied physics at the University of Port Harcourt and worked her way up in the church, eventually becoming music minister with the encouragement of her pastor. Sinach had written many songs before recording her first album, 2008's Chapter One. The praise and worship release featured a live choir. I'm Blessed followed suit in 2011, and another live album, Shout It Loud, appeared in 2012. It was recorded at the Lyric Theatre in South Africa. Her fourth long-player, From Glory to Glory, arrived in mid-2013, and she delivered a seasonal EP, Sinach at Christmas, that November. The full-length The Name of Jesus: Sinach Live in Concert came out in November 2014. In 2015, Sinach released the original song "Way Maker," which gained popularity in churches throughout 2016 and was included on the hit album Way Maker Live that November. Way Maker Live was eventually certified gold in South Africa in 2018, the year she issued her seventh album, There's an Overflow. Great God: Live in London followed in 2019. In the meantime, "Way Maker" became a worldwide phenomenon, with performers including Christafari, Maranda Curtis, and Bethel Music, among others, recording versions of it. In April 2020, covers by Grammy-nominated Christian group Leeland and crossover star Michael W. Smith both reached the Top Ten of the Billboard Christian songs chart. Smith's version climbed to number three the same week Leeland's peaked at number nine. That May, Sinach became the first African to top the Billboard USA Christian Songwriters chart.
