Katharina Konradi
A versatile figure at home in lieder and in opera of several types, Katharina Konradi is the first major vocal star to emerge from the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan. Based in Germany, Konradi has appeared in operas by Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner.
Konradi was born on June 13, 1988, in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek. Like many people in that city, formerly part of the Soviet Union, she grew up speaking Russian. At age 15, she moved to Hamburg, Germany. Although she spoke no German when she arrived, she succeeded in obtaining her Abitur (secondary school graduation) certificate at the Johannes-Brahms-Schule in Pinneberg in 2009. Konradi took voice lessons with Katja Pieweck and then enrolled at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, studying voice with Julie Kaufmann, contemporary lieder singing with Axel Bauni, and lied interpretation with Eric Schneider. In 2013, she made her operatic debut at the Kammeroper München, and in the 2014-2015 season, she appeared in the one-woman opera Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank at the Theater Hof in Bavaria. From 2014 to 2016, Konradi studied for a master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, taking voice classes with Christiane Iven and lied from Donald Sulzen. She also had master classes Helmut Deutsch and Klesie Kelly-Moog.
In 2015, Konradi joined the cast of the Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, Germany, remaining there until 2018. There, she performed various lyric soprano roles, including Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Nannetta in Verdi's Falstaff, and Gretel in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel. She had a major breakthrough in 2016 when she won the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb. The following year, Konradi performed the role of Ännchen in Weber's Der Freischütz at the Hamburg State Opera and was invited to join the cast of that company, beginning in 2018. That year marked Konradi's emergence as a major star as she was named a BBC New Generation Artist, performed at the prestigious Semperoper in Dresden, and released her debut album, the song recital Gedankenverloren, on the Genuin label. In 2019, Konradi appeared at the Bayreuth Festival and on tenor Rolando Villazón's television series Stars von morgen ("Stars of Tomorrow"). In 2020, she performed a song recital at London's Wigmore Hall, accompanied by Joseph Middleton; she has also often performed lieder with Eric Schneider. The year 2021 saw Konradi appear as Sophie in Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at the Bavarian State Opera. That year, she released the lieder album Liebende on the Avi-music label. In 2022, Konradi moved to Chandos for the album Russian Roots, featuring music for voice and piano trio; she was accompanied by the Gaspard Trio.
