Donny Benet

Ben Waples, who operates under the moniker Donny Benét, combines retro-fashion, R&B, funk, and post-disco to craft his distinctive brand of earnest dance-pop. His 2011 debut, Don't Hold Back, made him a cult figure in his native Australia, while his ARIA-charting fifth and sixth efforts, 2020's Mr. Experience and 2024's Infinite Desires, took him into the mainstream. Waples, hailing from a family of Italian musicians and music teachers, was born and raised in Sydney. His Italian heritage is a significant influence on his music; he started exploring it at an early age as a multi-instrumentalist. His love for the double bass led him to earn a master's degree in the instrument. In the mid-2000s, he showcased his talent as an accordionist and synth player in various Italian groups, and in 2010 he joined Jack Ladder's band the Dreamlanders, marking the beginning of his journey as Donny Benét. Inspired by artists like Suicide's Alan Vega, John Maus, Bryan Ferry, Prince, Jan Hammer, and Lou Reed, his music reflects his love of Italian disco and '80s pop, while his outsized persona and risqué lyrics evoke Tom Jones and Serge Gainsbourg. He inked a deal with Aussie independent label Rice Is Nice in 2011 and released Don't Hold Back, which elicited significant media praise. Subsequent efforts Electric Love (2012), Weekend at Donny's (2014), and The Don (2018) helped to solidify Benét's status as a dancefloor-filling cult hero. In early 2020, he released the single "Konichiwa," which the Weeknd included on his hand-picked playlist of songs that inspired After Hours. The track appeared on the full-length Mr. Experience, which reached number 26 on the ARIA charts and earned a pair of nominations at the 2020 ARIA Music Awards. Two years later, he released the instrumental EP Le Piano, which won Best Independent Jazz Album at the 2023 Air Awards. The retro-funk-leaning Infinite Desires, his sixth long-player, arrived in 2024.
