Carlos Vara

Adorning his exuberant, brooding electro-pop with high-contrast production and elements of contemporary hip-hop and R&B, singer and songwriter Carlos Vara went viral in 2018 with his first song, "Numb." He made his major-label debut the following year with the EP Have You Ever Seen a Boy Break Down? Raised in Lexington, South Carolina by a father who left behind his life as a nightclub owner to become a preacher, by junior high Vara was dealing with the onset of Tourette's syndrome in addition to feeling the need to hide his sexuality. Finding inspiration in artists like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, George Michael, and Freddie Mercury, he turned to music for solace and practiced singing while teaching himself to play keyboards. Vara left home a few years later and settled in Nashville, where he waited tables while finishing his high school degree online. Working on music by night, he released his first song, early 2018's "Numb," shortly after graduating. It made its way onto some high-profile playlists, including one curated by Adam Lambert, and went viral. Warner Records signed him in late 2018. Vara's Warner debut, "Confident," saw release early the next year. By then based in Los Angeles and openly queer, his first EP, Have You Ever Seen a Boy Break Down?, arrived in October 2019.
