Anna Mae

A pop singer and songwriter whose music is bold, dramatic, and playful (and often deals with the ups and downs of relationships), Anna Mae initially found success licensing songs for onscreen placements in the latter half of the 2010s before releasing her debut EP, If I'm Being Honest, in 2020. She followed it with non-EP singles including 2022's "Coming of Age," before releasing her first full-length album, 2022's For the Romantics, which favored the atmospheric side of her musical personality. A run of singles in 2023, including "Keep My Head Up," "Stronger," and "Stronger Now" (the latter featuring Parson James) reinforced her status as an expressive and prolific artist. Anna Mae was born Anna Mae Hoffbeck in Red Wing, Minnesota. She picked up her passion for music from her family. Her mother was an amateur vocalist who led the choir at church, and was also a big Joni Mitchell fan. Her father's tastes ran to hard rock, Bruce Springsteen, and the Beatles, while her siblings favored Coldplay and Death Cab for Cutie. Inspired by a diverse range of artists, including Relient K, Switchfoot, Lissie, and Needtobreathe, by the time Anna Mae became a teenager she'd decided she wanted a career in music. She began traveling to Nashville for songwriting sessions when she was in high school, and after she graduated, she relocated to Music City, where she enrolled at Belmont University, majoring in music business. In 2014, Anna Mae graduated, and in January 2016 she released her debut single, "Honey, I Need You." Several more digital singles followed, including "Over My Heels," "Just Watch," and "Savages" (the latter became especially popular on major streaming services), and as her reputation as a songwriter grew, Anna Mae's songs earned placements on TV and in movies. Television viewers heard her music on dozens of popular shows, including Grey's Anatomy, Orange Is the New Black, and The Bachelorette, as well as a car commercial that was aired during the Super Bowl. Moviegoers were exposed to her singing in the trailer for the 2018 Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex. She next landed a publishing deal with Prescription Songs, a company founded by successful writer and producer Dr. Luke. While making her mark as a tunesmith, Anna Mae continued to record and release material, including the track "Single-Minded" in February 2018 and the holiday ballad "All Alone on Christmas" in late 2019. She delivered her first EP, the self-released If I'm Being Honest, in March 2020. Anna Mae's singles output resumed with tracks like an October 2020 cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams," 2021's "Roaring 20s," and the atmospheric ballad "Coming of Age" in 2022. Before the year was out, Anna Mae delivered her first full-length album, the nine-song For the Romantics, which focused on the softer and more passionate side of her songwriting. 2023 saw her bring out more single tracks, including "Keep My Head Up," "Stronger," and a duet with vocalist Parson James, "Stronger Now." 2023 also saw Anna Mae begin work on her second album. 2024's Heatwave Heaven was an upbeat pop project produced and co-written by fellow singer and tunesmith Carobae. Other songwriters who contributed to the LP included Emily Haber (who penned "Naive" for Andy Grammer), Megan Redmond (she co-wrote "Life of the Party" with Charlotte Sands), and EJ Saftner (who previously worked with Suki Waterhouse).
