Après une première place des charts obtenue au Royaume-Uni avec Evering Road en 2021, l’ancien footballeur entérine sa reconversion avec un What Ifs & Maybes qui réussit la passe de deux. Une performance notable car ce nouvel opus s’accompagne d’un changement stylistique assez net. Lassé par les ballades – il en réserve tout de même quelques-unes, Thomas Greenan a souhaité injecté de l’énergie et hausser les tempos. « Remind Me » synthétise cet état d’esprit que Jamie Scott, principal collaborateur de Tom Greenan à la production, a favorisé. Malheureusement, les bonnes intentions ne font pas les grandes chansons et l’album pêche par facilité. Les textes regorgent de lieux communs et les instrumentations de formules éculées, comme les breaks mécaniques de « How Does It Feel » ou le piano-voix « This Side of the Room ». Émergent toutefois quelques satisfactions comme « You’re Not Alone », une ballade introspective sans effets de manche ou le groove instinctif de « Psychedelic Kisses ».
